Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM)

Project Objective

The Primary objectives of the JNNURM is to create economically productive, efficient, equitable and responsive cities. In line with this, the Mission focuses on:

  • 1. Integrated development of infrastructure services.
  • 2. Securing linkages between asset creation and maintenance for long run project sustainability.
  • 3. Accelerating the flow of investment into urban infrastructure services.
  • 4. Planned development of cities including the peri-urban areas, outgrowths, and urban corridors.
  • 5. Renewal and re-development of inner city areas.
  • 6. Universalisation of urban services so as to ensure their availability to the urban poor.

Project Scope

The main thrust of the Sub-Missions will be on infrastructure projects relating to water supply and sanitation, sewerage, solid waste management, road network, urban transport and redevelopment of old city areas with a view to upgrading infrastructure therein, shifting industrial and commercial establishments to conforming areas and integrated development of slums through projects for providing shelter, basic services and other related civic amenities with a view to providing utilities to the urban poor.

Project Components

    The Sub-Missions are
  • 1. Urban Infrastructure & Governance (UIG)
  • 2.Urban Transport (UT)
  • 3. Basic Services to the Urban Poor (BSUP)
  • These function under separate Ministries to consider project proposals under JnNURM. UIG & UT is managed by Ministry of Urban Development Department (MoUD) while BSUP is administrated by Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (MoHUPA).

Project Implementation

The projects are implemented by various agencies, namely, BBMP, BWSSB, BDA, BMTC, KSDB, MCC, MUDA, KUWS&DB, KSRTC, Zoo Authority of Karnataka, NEKRTC, NWKRTC & Hubli-Dharwad BRTS Co. Ltd. The duration of the Mission was seven years from the year 2005-06 to 2011-12. It was further extended upto March 2014 for UIG projects and March 2017 for BSUP projects.
